Perception, the ability to see light, color, reflection and materials, the direct connection between the visual cortex and the brain is the driving force of my work. Perception is not static. It is ever changing existing in multiple states at the same time, similar to the Hiesenberg Principle in quantum physics. Strongly influenced by the Constructivist and Minimalist movements I strive to create work on a grand scale visually from as little as possible focusing on the beauty of simplicity. Work that is ordered and concise, yet focused on its human and aesthetic qualities.
“BLACK”, the black painting series, more precisely perfectly flat sculptures created with paint explore the perception of light, reflection and surface. Why black? In light black is the absence of all light. In color mixing black is the combination of all colors. So black is both everything and nothing at the same time depending on one’s perspective.
“REFLECTIONS”, the color squares series, explores the perception of light, color and reflection. Light reflecting from colored surfaces onto a white background create subtle tints.
“BENT STEEL”, the steel and wood series, explore the duality and perception of materials. Steel, a rigid material, is formed into flowing sensuous lines. The contrast of the organic wood, holding and supporting, adds tension and human qualities.
Though it never moves, my art constantly changes, behaving like a motionless mobile, dependent on the relationship of the viewer to the art, the passage of time or variations in lighting. On certain meditative or introspective levels, this perpetual progression references the continuous nature of life itself.
